YHWH: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in Hebrews

YHWH: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in Hebrews

In this post, I will be quoting passages in Hebrews where Old Testament texts about YHWH are applied to both the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. This affirms that, to the inspired writer, YHWH God isn’t a singular Person, but is in reality a Tri-Personal Being who eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

THE PERSON OF CHRIST

YHWH in the Old Testament

“Because of him each of his messengers succeeds, and by his word all things hold together.”
— Sirach 43:26, New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVUE)

“Do Not Hide Your Face from Me: A Prayer of the afflicted when he is faint and pours out his complaint before Yahweh. O Yahweh, hear my prayer! And let my cry for help come to You… But You, O Yahweh, abide forever, and the remembrance of Your name from generation to generation…

Of old You founded the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. Even they will perish, but You will remain; and all of them will wear out like a garment; Like clothing You will change them, and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will not come to an end.”
— Psalm 102:1, 12, 25–27

“In the beginning thou, O Lord (Kyrie), didst lay the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands. They shall perish, but thou remainest: and [they all] shall wax old as a garment;
And as a vesture shalt thou fold them, and they shall be changed. But thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.”
— Psalm 101:26–28, Brenton’s LXX

Jesus Christ in Hebrews

“In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe through him. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word…”
— Hebrews 1:2–3a, Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

“But to the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God (ho theos), endures forever and ever. You rule with a scepter of justice…’ He also says to the Son, ‘In the beginning, Lord (Kyrie), you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands. They will perish, but you remain forever. They will wear out like old clothing. You will fold them up like a cloak and discard them like old clothing. But you are always the same; you will live forever.’”
— Hebrews 1:8a, 10–12, New Living Translation (NLT)

DEUTERONOMY 32:43 AND DIVINE WORSHIP

YHWH Worshipped

Deuteronomy 32:43 is unusual due to variant readings among manuscripts. For instance, the Qumran scroll (4QDeut) and the Septuagint differ markedly from the Masoretic Text and the Samaritan Pentateuch:

“Rejoice, O heavens, together with him, and bow down to him all you gods,
For he will avenge the blood of his sons,
And will render vengeance to his enemies,
And will recompense those who hate him,
And will atone for the land of his people.”
(Abegg, Flint, & Ulrich, Dead Sea Scrolls Bible, pp. 192–193)

“Rejoice, ye heavens, with him, and let all the angels of God worship him (kai proskynesatosan auto angeloi theou)… And the Lord shall purge the land of his people.”
— Deuteronomy 32:43, Brenton’s LXX

“Let all those be ashamed who serve graven images, who boast of idols; Worship Him, all you gods!”
— Psalm 97:7

“Let all that worship graven images be ashamed… worship him, all you his angels.”
— Psalm 96:7, Brenton’s LXX

“Who is like Yahweh our God, the One who sits on high.”
— Psalm 113:5, LSB

“Who is as the Lord our God? who dwells in the high places (en hypselois)”
— Psalm 112:5, Brenton’s LXX

Jesus Christ Enthroned and Worshipped

“… When He had by Himself purged our sins (di’ heautou katharismon ton hamartion poiesamenos hemon), He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high (en hypselois)… And again, when He brings the firstborn into the world, He says: ‘Let all the angels of God worship Him (kai proskynesatosan auto angeloi theou).’”
— Hebrews 1:3b, 6, Modern English Version (MEV)

These texts show YHWH creating and sustaining all things, making atonement, reigning on high, and receiving angelic worship—all attributed to Jesus Christ. The implication? Jesus is YHWH Almighty Incarnate—the one true God of Israel, made flesh to redeem humanity.

“But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor… Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity… That he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”
— Hebrews 2:9–18, New International Version (NIV)

THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

YHWH Speaking in the Psalms

“Come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before Yahweh our Maker. For He is our God… Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts… They tested Me… though they had seen My work. For forty years I loathed that generation… Therefore I swore in My anger, ‘They shall never enter into My rest.’”
— Psalm 95:6–11

Holy Spirit Quoted in Hebrews

“Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, ‘Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts… They saw My works for forty years… I was angry… As I swore in My wrath, “They shall not enter My rest.”’”
— Hebrews 3:7–11

YHWH in Jeremiah

“‘But this is the covenant which I will cut with the house of Israel after those days,’ declares Yahweh:
‘I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it… For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.’”
— Jeremiah 31:33–34

The Spirit Declares

“For after saying, ‘This is the covenant that I will make with them… I will put My laws upon their heart…’ He then says, ‘And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.’”
— Hebrews 10:15–17

These examples from Hebrews identify the Holy Spirit as none other than YHWH God, speaking through the Psalmist and the prophet Jeremiah. This shows that the Spirit is not an impersonal force, but an uncreated divine Person who shares the one infinite Being of God—possessed fully by both the Father and the Son.
