🕊️ Watch Your Mouth: A Journey from Secularism to Orthodoxy

There was a time in my life when my identity was rooted in secularism and atheism. My friendships reflected that—raw, unfiltered, and often unedifying. We spoke freely, saying whatever came to mind, with little thought to the impact of our words. But everything changed when I embraced Orthodox Christianity.

🌱 The Beginning of Transformation

Becoming Orthodox wasn’t just a shift in belief—it was the start of a profound inner struggle. I quickly realized how deeply ingrained my old habits were. The “old man” within me, shaped by years of secular living, had a strong hold. Temptations were fierce, and I found myself wrestling with the very nature of my speech and behavior.

In a moment of vulnerability, I turned to my confessor. His advice was simple yet transformative:

“You need to demonstrate how Christ has changed your heart by how you speak, act, and behave with your friends who do not know Christ. Let them see the light of Christ in you.”

He added something even more piercing:

“If you find it difficult to refrain from your old jokes, your old sense of humor, your old secular nature among your friends, then perhaps it’s time to walk away and seek out friendships in church—friendships with other believers.”

🔄 Rebuilding Relationships

That counsel led me to reevaluate my relationships. Today, only one friend from my pre-Christian life remains close—Paul. Like me, he was once secular and non-religious. But Paul, too, embraced Christ. It was Christ who changed him, just as He changed me.

🗣️ The Power of Speech

In my former life, I spoke whatever came to mind. But now, as an Orthodox Christian, I’ve learned that speech must be rooted in faith and prayer. Before words leave my lips, I seek to be centered in Christ. My speech must reflect my faith and be orchestrated by Him.

“I must live as a Christian, but I also must speak as a Christian.”

And that can only happen if I ask God for help.

🙌 Glory to God

This journey has been one of surrender, transformation, and grace. I give glory to God for all things.
